Remove Image Background — Free AI Tool
Instantly remove backgrounds from photos using RMBG-1.4, an open-weights AI model by BRIA AI. Upload a product photo, headshot, or any image and get a clean transparent PNG in seconds — all processed locally in your browser.
Common use cases include e-commerce product photos (white or branded backgrounds), profile pictures for LinkedIn and social media, presentation slides, logo cutouts, and digital art composites.
The AI model (~44 MB) is downloaded once and cached locally in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.
How AI background removal works
Traditional background removal relies on colour keying (chroma key) or manual selection. AI-based removal uses a neural network trained on millions of images to identify foreground subjects — people, products, animals, objects — and produce a precise alpha mask regardless of background complexity.
RMBG-1.4 uses an IS-Net architecture fine-tuned for background removal. The model resizes your image to 1024×1024 internally, predicts a pixel-wise mask, then the original-resolution image is composited with that mask to produce a clean transparent PNG at full quality.
Because the model runs via WebAssembly in your browser, no data is transmitted to any server. After the model is downloaded once (~44 MB), it is cached by your browser and the tool works completely offline.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Does this background remover upload my images?
- No. The AI model (RMBG-1.4 by BRIA AI) runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Your images never leave your device — not even a single pixel is sent to a server.
- How long does background removal take?
- On first use, the AI model (~44 MB) is downloaded and cached locally — this typically takes 10–30 seconds depending on your connection. Subsequent uses are instant since the model is cached. The actual inference takes a few seconds.
- What image formats are supported?
- You can upload JPG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF images. The result is always exported as a PNG with a transparent background (or JPEG if you choose a solid background colour).
- Can I add a background colour after removing the original?
- Yes. After the background is removed, you can pick any solid colour from the preset palette or enter a custom hex colour. The image will be composited onto that colour and downloadable as a JPEG.
